It is used as a topical drug for medical depigmentation. It is a colourless solid that is classified as the monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone.

Monobenzone usp powder, applied topically to the skin, is used as a depigmenting agent inhibitting melanin produced by polymerization of oxidation products of tyrosine and dihydroxyphenyl compounds. It works by permanently removing color from normal skin located around skin with vitiligo.

Can normal people use monobenzone powder?
Do not use it on any areas that are not affected by vitiligo. It is not for treating freckles, café-au-lait spots, sun damage, melanoma, jaundice, or other pigmentation disorders not caused by vitiligo.
