What is monobenzone？

Pure monobenzone powder, also called 4-phenol and monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone is an organic chemical in the phenol family with chemical formula C₆H₅CH₂OC₆H₄OH. It is used as a topical drug for medical depigmentation. It is a colourless solid that is classified as the monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone.

What does the monobenzone do?
Monobenzone usp powder, applied topically to the skin, is used as a depigmenting agent inhibitting melanin produced by polymerization of oxidation products of tyrosine and dihydroxyphenyl compounds. It works by permanently removing color from normal skin located around skin with vitiligo.

Can normal people use monobenzone powder?
Do not use it on any areas that are not affected by vitiligo. It is not for treating freckles, café-au-lait spots, sun damage, melanoma, jaundice, or other pigmentation disorders not caused by vitiligo.

Is monobenzone harmful?
Side effects include burning sensation after use, satellite depigmentation in distant sites, and “consort vitiligo,” which consists of the occurrence of vitiligo in persons cohabiting with patients using it.

Is monobenzone reversible?
Benoquin is a topical prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for removing pigment in people with vitiligo that covers more than 50 percent of their body. 1,2 The skin bleaching effects of Benoquin are permanent and irreversible.

What is an alternative to it?
An alternate method of lightening is to use the chemical mequinol over an extended period of time. Both it and mequinol produce dramatic skin whitening, but react very differently.

What are the side effects of it?
Common side effects of it include skin irritation, redness, itching, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. In some cases, over-depigmentation or uneven skin tone may occur. It is typically applied topically to the affected areas of the skin as directed by a healthcare provider.

How quickly does it work?
It may take up to 4-6 months before the full benefit of Monobenzone 20% cream is seen. Once the desired skin color is achieved, this medication is applied only as needed to maintain the new skin color (usually 2 times a week).
